Abstract - An outline history of Zionism from its origins to the First World War

The aim of this article is to give the reader a general framing of the Zionist movement – its main events and issues – until the First World War. After a quick glance at the early Zionism – the Hibbat Zion group and Yehuda Leib Pinsker – the study examines the birth of Zionism as a political movement and its fitting in the milieu of the late Nineteenth century nationalisms, from which Theodor Herzl was certainly inspired. The Herzlian Zionism was just one of the currents in the renascence's movement of the Hebrew nation. With regard to this, one must remember two other currents: the Spiritual (or Cultural) Zionism – Ahad Ha'am, its leader, thought that recovering the sentiment of national cohesion was possible although the Hebrew People would have remained in the Diaspora – and the philanthropic Zionism – spread through the Jews of Western Europe, it consisted in relief activities and fund raising –. The last part of the article focuses on the development of the Zionist movement in Italy.

Abstract - The Beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Arabs and Jews in Palestine from the Ottoman Empire to the British Mandate (1880-1920)

This article analyzes the beginning of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by focusing on the relationship between Arabs and Jews in the Ottoman Palestine from 1880 to 1920. In those four decades, while Zionism began to spread around, an increasing number of Jews migrated from Eastern Europe to that region, which they referred to as Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel). At the same time, for a combination of endogenous and exogenous causes, the Arab population living there started developing a national political identity. The encounter between Zionism and Palestinian nationalism gave birth to a conflict where two opposed national movements – despite differences in their strength, development and structure - were aiming at establishing their own state on the same land, for whose control Israelis and Palestinians are still fighting.

Abstrac - Educating to separation: history of the educational policies in British Palestine (1922-1948)

This article looks at the British mandate in Palestine (1922-1948) as the last period in which the country was united and it discusses the growth of the national and political antagonism between the Jewish Zionist community (Yishuv) and the Arab-Palestinian one through the lenses of the mandatory policies towards both. In particular, in the second part, it focuses on the role played by education in this national competition, from elementary school to higher education. This article integrates primary sources from a vast array of UK and European archives with a vast bibliographical research which discusses the historiographical placement of the Mandate in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
